Romford Market Stall Holder Receives Confiscation Order

Adam Williams, aged 42 of Eastern Avenue, Romford received a confiscation order for £1500 on the 24th of July 2009.

Williams had been involved in the sale of counterfeit jewellery at Romford Market and the copying of pornographic films which were intended for sale. On the 18th of December 2008, Williams was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months and 200 hours of unpaid work for ten offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and one offence under the Obscene Publications Act 1959.

The financial investigation on Williams was a referral to London RART from the London Borough of Havering Trading Standards Department. On the 20th of October 2006, officers from Havering Trading Standards made a test purchase on what purported to be a Tiffany keyring on sale for £25 at a stall in Romford Market. The stall was run by two men, one of whom was Adam Williams. 147 items of counterfeit Tiffany jewellery was seized from the stall.

On the 22nd of November 2006, Trading Standards officers raided William's home address where a further 219 counterfeit Tiffany items were seized.

A multi DVD burner was also found at William's address, together with a large quantity of DVDs involving pornography. Some of the DVDs depicted bestiality.

Barry Kendler, Head of Public Protection at Havering Council said, "The counterfeiting of luxury goods is prevalent and our Trading Standards will continue to inspect car boot sales and markets to stamp it out. This kind of counterfeiting harms legitimate business and in this current economic climate we are even more determined to protect Havering's firms, jobs and consumers."

DCI Nick Downing of London RART said, "The London RART is pleased to have worked in partnership with Havering Trading Standards to bring this investigation into counterfeit goods to a successful conclusion. Counterfeit goods cause harm to both legitimate business and unsuspecting customers."
