THE METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE

The Metropolitan Police Service is famous around the world and can trace it origins back to 1829. It is by far the largest police force in the UK employing in the region of 43,000 people. The Metropolitan Police is responsible for policing the majority of London, a task shared with the City of London Police (see below).

The Metropolitan Police is the lead agency of London RART, providing eighteen members of staff.

THE CITY OF LONDON POLICE

The City of London Police is responsible for providing policing to London’s so called ‘Square Mile’, or ‘The City’ as it is better known to Londoners.

It is a unique police service in many ways, not least because it is the smallest constabulary in England and Wales.  More imortantly, because the City of London is a world centre for financial services and banking, it provides a bespoke police service capable of working in the City's unique environment and the policing challenges that it represents.  It also has a well regarded Economic Crime Department that deals with fraud and financial crime within the City.

The City of London Police was formally established in 1839 by the Corporation of London, to modernise it in line with the new Metropolitan Police.  Today, it employs in the region of 800 officers and is responsible for the safety of about 8,000 residents and 350,000 daily commuters.

HMRC has responsibility for the collection of revenue from taxes (such as income tax and Value Added Tax). They also have a vital front-line role in combating criminal offences such as drug trafficking and tax fraud.
