In one of Middlesbrough’s largest ever rulings on “criminal benefits”, four men agreed that they made a total of £5,734,149 from crime. They were yesterday ordered to pay £326,032 between them - the amount they currently have at their disposal. NE News - Carter Mortage Fraud Confiscation - 25 Aug 2009
Judge John Swanson ordered the amount of £10,165.15 be repaid by David Carter within the next three months. If he defaults on the payments he faces six months in prison and will still have the debt to repay when he comes out. Stephen Bagnall was also made subject of a confiscation order in the sum of £57,500.50 to be repaid within six months. Cleveland Police made a referral to the North East Regional Asset Recovery Team to conduct a confiscation investigation following a conviction for conspiring to supply drugs and money laundering. As part of this process, a BMW valued in excess of £21,000, was identified as representing part of Christopher Maloney’s criminal gains. The Moloneys falsely claimed the BMW had been sold but several months later, it was found in Harrogate at the Care Home where Christopher Maloney’s sister worked. ......

Confiscation orders were made in the sum of £40,000 for David Burdett and £50,000 for Colin Smith; both were given 6 months to pay or face default prison sentences. Smith and Burdett were found guilty of laundering the proceeds of a scam which involved selling air purifiers, de-humidifer units and service contracts to elderly and vulnerable people at vastly inflated prices.
