Court Cures Medical Manager's Greed
The Wales RART has obtained a significant order and secured compensation for the victims in a complex case at Newport Crown Court.
Deidre Sellars, from Abergavenny, was employed as the General Manager of a doctor’s surgery in Newport between March 1999 and April 2005. In her position, she was responsible for the business, financial and fund holding management which included day to day running of the practice bank account and business card. Sellars systematically stole money from her employer by a variety of means. This included grossly inflating her monthly salary, using the practice business card for her own use, making cheques payable to cash and keeping the money or paying cheques into her own personal account.
The thefts, which occurred systematically over the six year period, were finally discovered when other members of staff became suspicious of bills and invoices. An investigation conducted by Gwent police subsequently uncovered the true extent of her dishonesty – the theft of over £86,000.
Following a thorough investigation by the Wales RART, Sellars appeared at Newport Crown Court on 4th April 2006 where she was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. The court also agreed that her benefit from crime was £86,776.33 and she was given a confiscation order for that amount. The Court also ordered that compensation be paid back to the practice from the money to be confiscated from her. It appears that she will have to relinquish her pension and all her savings in order to pay back the money.
